Artist statement:
Cal MacKinnon.
Beyond
the Pink Poodle, is a documentation
of personal moments and private spaces, capturing resonant fragments
of a fading era.
I grew up on The Gold Coast and have watched
it's dramatic changes. In the three years I have been working on
this project, The Pink Poodle Motel has been replaced by a high
rise apartment, The Mayfair motel demolished, The Red Lion Motel
is for sale, and The Silver Sands Motel has been sold and is due
for demolition in April 2006 for a 21 story apartment block.
I stayed in each of these motels, recording a night within my
own life, and documenting these unique and disappearing icons of
the Queensland landscape.
Narrative is one of the most important elements
of my work. Within that, I aim to create a subtext, subtle nuance,
and unpredictability. In these images there is evidence of habitation,
but no people. Only what's left behind.
Leaving a lot to the imagination,
I encourage inquiry as to what has happened in these rooms.
Who
has stayed here?
Why where they here? \
What fragments of their lives
echo in these spaces?
